Local Markets have a limited variety of vegetables and fruits grown in the yucatan mostly around Oxkutzcab in the Ruta Puuc. The meat section is a grizzly reminder most of us would rather not remember as we slice into our rib eye. But it is well worth spending some time at the Central Market in Merida or one of these smaller markets in each neighborhood for there are many priceless photo ops, some local crafts and for the adventurous eaters there are food stalls and hawkers.

This Mega is the best place to shop in Merida if you don't want to make more than one stop. You can buy good meat, fish, vegtables and fruits and they have a good selection of wine and liquor. There is a pharmacy. There is not great cheese here however and that can be found at the costco nearby if you have a card or 5 minutes away at Superama.

Organic Markets

On Saturdays there is a slow food market in Merida off of Calle 60 from 9 am to 1pm. There are always great bakery products there with fresh yogurt. Depending on the season there are fresh veggies and fruit. The supermarkets with the best selection of organic produce and products is Superama. Costco does have a good organic tomatoes and salad greens. There is a small section in most of the other supermarkets but not produce.

Slow Food Market Calle 31 x 60, Chuburna de Hidalgo, catty-cornered to the Super Faraon (turn at the light across the street from the OXXO).

Update: November 2011
There is a new organic market on Saturdays at La 68 on the corner of 68 and 55 in centro from 10am to 2pm. It's an excellent place to have lunch as well the quesadillas are great. It's called Ecobazar del Sabado.

Markets near Candelaria & Santiago

There is a public market in the mornings at Santiago Square which has good fruits and veggies. There is a fresh dairy stand on the corner of calles 57 x 70. There is a beer store next to the Cinema Rex on 57. There is a little supermarket Aki on calle 72 between 57 & 59 for basics. There is a new Aki supermarket that is larger than the one on Santiago Park at calle 59 x 80. If you have a car it would be better to go to Mega Balcones on Avenida Itzaes.

Markets near Ermita or San Sebastian

If you are staying in Ermita or San Sebastian there are several options. There are two tortilla mills on the north east corner of the park and one of them sells some vegetables. Here there is also a bakery where you can buy pan frances if you are early enough. If not there are other bakeries down the calle 77 at the market of San Sebastian on the corner of 70. If you drive further down calle 77 to Avenida Itzaes you'll find two supermarkets.

Chedraui is just a block to the right. Bodega Aurrera is to the left (south) near calle 81-A. But if you have a car it's much better to do your shopping at Mega Balcones which is further north on Avenida Itzaes.

Markets near Santa Ana

If you are staying at one of our houses near Santa Ana there is a public market in the plaza on calle 47 x 60 & 58. You can try different taco and sandwich stands in outside the market and inside during the mornings you can buy fruit and vegetables. There is also a taxi stand on the corner of 47 & 60. The closest supermarket is Walmart on Paseo Montejo & Avenida Colon about 10 blocks North of Santa Ana. But I would recommend going to Mega Balcones which is part of the Commercial Mexicana chain and is on Av. Circuito Colonias near Calle 60.
